Visited Western Samoa, Fiji and Vanuatu before
holding consultations with delegations of Fiji, Kiribati, Papua New
Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Vanuatu and Western Samoa at the
1993 IMF/World Bank Annual Meetings in Washington D.C. Also had
detailed discussions with IMF and UNDP (New York) to establish
guidelines for IMF/UNDP collaboration in executing the proposed
regional project to assist the Pacific Island Countries with
financial and economic management reforms. A project formulation
framework (PFF) based on UNDP format was produced after the
consultations to approve UNDP/IMF funding for the regional project. |

Detailed Narrative Description of Project:
Based on the consultations a regional project was
formulated to establish a centre at the Reserve Bank of Fiji,
managed by the IMF to provide technical assistance and training to
the Pacific Island Countries focusing on budget management, tax
reform, bank supervision and balance of payment statistics. The
regional centre is envisaged to ultimately coordinate the
interventions of all donors for the economic and financial
management reforms. |
