Surveyed and reviewed the priority needs for private sector development
in Kiribati before preparing a project document for utilising a US$1million UNDP grant to
focus on institutional strengthening and training programmes. |
Detailed Narrative
Description of Project:
The project was part of a major push for privatisation of a number
of Government enterprises and general private sector development in Kiribati. The survey
of priority needs however highlighted the lack of depth in the private sector which had to
be addressed through strengthening of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to guide and
manage private sector policies and an integrated training and financing scheme to support
local entrepreneurs to start small businesses. The proposed UNDP intervention was focused
also on retraining of public servants to be made redundant from public service reforms for
private sector activities. |
